About the Journal
Journal of urban Planning and Architecture is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality, original research. Please see the journal's Aims & Scope for information about its focus and peer-review policy.
Please note that this journal publishes manuscripts in Persian
Journal of Urban Planning and Architecture accepts the following types of article: Articles, Book Reviews, Critical Reviews and Special Issues.
Articles
The mainstay of what is published in Journal of Urban Planning and Architecture is its traditional articles. Most of these combine conceptual, empirical and methodological elements to make an original and critical contribution to the field. The journal accepts papers from across the conceptual and methodological spectrum. JUPA positively welcomes papers on global south cities.
Book Reviews
Jupa publishes reviews of recent books and monographs which contribute to the advancement of knowledge in urban planning, architecture, urban geography and cognate disciplines such as urban anthropology, urban politics, urban sociology and urban studies.
A book review for JUPA should accomplish three things:
- 1. Describe the nature, content, scope, and purpose of the book and its place in the literature of the subject field.
- 2. Analyze the contents and indicate the functions and use of the Shortcomings may be noted as appropriate.
- 3. Evaluate in a thoughtful and objective manner the success of the book in achieving its stated goal(s). Indicate its contribution to the field.
It is recommended that reviewers will:
- 1. Advise the book review editor if the book should not be reviewed or if the reviewer does not feel qualified to undertake the review. In both cases the book should be returned to the book review editor immediately.
- 2. Where two or more books may be reviewed jointly, employ a comparative approach in evaluating their contents and contributions.
- 3. Avoid digressive essays; confine comments to the book under evaluation.
- 4. Avoid detailed descriptions of content and lengthy quotations from the book. Where an extended quote is necessary, it should be indented, and a page reference cited in parentheses following the quote.
- 5. Limit the length of the book review to approximately 1000 words.
Reviews should be completed within four months. Publishing deadlines do not permit return to reviewers of galleys or page proofs. Reviews normally will be edited only for style. Reviewers have freedom of expression in the substance of their reviews. All correspondence concerning book reviews should be addressed to: Aliakbar Sajjadi, University of Tehran, IRAN, SaSajjadi@ut.ac.ir
Critical Reviews
Reflecting the vibrant nature of scholarly debate in urban planning, architecture (and in urban and regional studies more broadly), the Critical review section of Journal of Urban Planning and Architecture consists of papers that provide state of the art introductions, discussions and critiques in areas of urban planning research – conceptual, methodological or philosophical. Their point is to take stock of what we already know and to outline ways forward based on existing academic literature in and beyond urban planning. Critical reviews should be submitted directly to JUPA through its online submission system and adhere to the journal’s guidelines for standard papers. Please indicate “Critical Reviews” as the series under which you are submitting your work.
Special Issues
Journal of Urban Planning and Architecture welcomes proposals for Special Issues, which provide a critical forum for sets of complementary or contrasting articles addressing emergent and topical issues or questions. Special Issues normally consist of an introduction from the Guest Editor(s) and three to six related papers.
The standard journal word lengths generally apply (papers of about 10 000 words), but there is no set template for the number of papers or the length of each submission. Shorter collective contributions may be considered for inclusion as a Special Feature and related content may be spread across more than one issue. If you are interested in sending a proposal for a Special Issue or Special Feature, please provide an outline of the topic (approx. 1 page) to be considered and the rationale for its development and inclusion as a Special Issue in Journal of Urban Planning and Architecture.
The proposal should also include a brief (250-word) abstract for each of the constituent papers within the proposed Special Issue, providing the author(s) name(s), affiliation(s) and contact details. Interested contributors are encouraged to contact the Special Issues Editor: Aliakbar Sajjadi, Tehran University, Iran, SaSajjadi@ut.ac.ir

Video Summary Guideline (not part of submission process)
As another JUPA knowledge translation activity, we invite authors of selected publications to prepare a video summary of their articles to be published on the JUPA YouTube Channel.
Note: Video summary is not part of submission process. Only after publication, editors select some articles and invite authors for a video summary, which is optional and authors can decline the invitation.
Our video summaries present the summary of our recently published articles, filmed by articles’ authors. By video summaries we aim to help both academics and non-academics to scan the literature promptly and understand quickly the key themes of an article without going through pages of an article. We hope that our video summaries will help our articles to be more visible, reachable, and discoverable. We also hope to provide a personalized forum for our authors to simply convey their article messages to the JUPA global readership.
To prepare video please kindly consider the following points:
The length of video should be maximum 4 minutes.
The video should present the summery of article.
The authors are encouraged to use images, animations, and slides to increase visibility of their videos.
The speaker should seat at the center of the frame.
The camera or the smart phone must be at the same level as the speaker, not higher or lower.
The space at both top and bottom of the screen should be 20 cm.
The speaker should leave enough pauses (5-6 seconds) before starting and after finishing the talk.
To avoid camera shake, we recommend using a tripod.
The speaker should not seat in a place with a window at the background; we recommended seating in a place with a wall at the background.
The speaker should keep the noise down at the time of recording.
We recommend using the MP4 format.
We recommend a landscape mode with the frame size of 1280*720 pixels
